Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo – Capitano del Popolo Palace

Venne realizzato, tra il 1473 ed il 1481 nell’antica piazza del Sopramuro, su progetto degli architetti lombardi Gasperino di Antonio e Leone di Matteo. Il Palazzo ospitò i Capitani del Popolo e in seguito i Bargelli (Capitani delle guardie).

Presenta elementi architettonici medioevali e rinascimentali con preesistenti strutture antiche. La facciata, originariamente munita di altro ordine superiore e coronata di merlatura, distrutta dal terremoto del 1741, venne poi restaurata da Luigi Vanvitelli nelle forme attuali.
Nei sotterranei sono inglobati edifici di fondazione romana, ricostruiti alla fine del XIV sec.
Attualmente è sede del Tribunale

The palace was built between 1473 and 1481 by the lombard architects Gasperino di Antonio and it stands in the square once known as “Sopramuro”, today Matteotti. It received the ‘Capitani del Popolo’ (Captains of the People) and later the ‘Bargelli’ (captains of the guards).

It has medieval and Renaissance architectural elements with antecedents ancient structures. The façade, originally presenting another upper order and crowned with battlements, collapsed due to the 1741 earthquake but was restored to it’s actual structure by Luigi Vanvitelli, and it can be admired today.
In the underground are buildings of Roman foundations, erected by the end of the XIV Century.

Today it is the seat of the Court of Justice
