Museo Beato Benedetto XI – Beato Benedetto XI Museum

Adiacente alla sacrestia della Basilica di San Domenico, per volontà dei Padri Domenicani, è stato aperto nel 2019 un museo dedicato a Papa Benedetto XI, per valorizzare il complesso paramento liturgico storicamente associato al pontefice domenicano

Nel museo sono comprese anche preziose produzioni seriche italiane di fine duecento e inizio Trecento, come il “diasporo” lucchese, considerato come la rielaborazione gotica italiana dei “panni tartarici”.Il museo contiene infine altre memorie artistiche anteriori al rifacimento seicentesco della Basilica, quali gli affreschi di Cola Petruccioli (Orvieto, 1360 circa – Perugia, 1401), che ne decoravano l’abside, come ulteriore testimonianza dello splendore del convento domenicano a partire dal XIV secolo.

Next to the sacristy, a new museum dedicated to Pope Benedetto XI was opened in 2019, thanks to the Dominican fathers, to enhance the complex liturgical vestment, historically associated with the Dominican pontiff.

The museum also includes precious Italian silk reproductions from the end of the XIII and the beginning of the XIV Century, such as the “diasporo” from Lucca, considered as the Italian gothic reworked version of the “tartaric clothes”. Finally, the museum contains other artistic memories prior to the XVII Century renovation of the Basilica, such as the frescoes by Cola Petruccioli (Orvieto, about 1360 – Perugia, 1401) which decorated the apse, as further evidence of the splendour of the Dominican Convent from the XIV Century onward.
