Appartiene alla cinta muraria medievale e prende nome dall’antichissimo monastero benedettino femminile fuori le mur
The Gate of S. Margherita belongs to the medieval city walls and is named after the ancient Benedictine cloister outside the city walls
Descrizione
Il monastero benedettino femminile, ubicato fuori dalla cinta, trasformato in ospedale psichiatrico nel 1818. Oggi l’area è adibita a scuole, università e servizi sanitari.Al lato interno destro è un bastione in mattoni, probabilmente rimanenza di una fortificazione cinquecentesca.Nel bastione è incassata una nicchia con un’immagine della Madonna. Nel 1821 la porta fu tamponata e ne venne realizzata un’altra con lo stesso nome di fronte ai cancelli dell’ex ospedale psichiatrico. Nel 1934 la porta medievale fu riaperta mentre quella ottocentesca fu demolita.

The Benedectine Monastery was tansformed into a psychiatric hospital in 1818, today the area is seat of school, university and health services.
On the right side of the inner façade, is a bastion made of brick, probably remains of a XVI Century fortification. In the bastion, a recess with an image of the Virgin Mary. In 1821 this gater was closed and a new one with the same name was built infront of the former psychiatric hospital. In 1934 the medieval gate was reopened while the one of the XIX Century was demolished.
