Porta San Costanzo – Gate of San Costanzo

Rimase incompiuta rispetto al progetto originale e venne realizzata dai monaci benedettini nel 1587 su progetto di Valentino Martelli, occupando un terreno di loro proprietà.La costruzione della porta e della nuova strada si resero necessarie a seguito dell’ampliamento dell’Abbazia di San Pietro, le cui pertinenze andarono ad inglobare la medievale porta di Braccio e l’antico tracciato viario.Sebbene maestosa, venne popolarmente definita “portaccia”, forse per il raffronto con la vicina porta di San Pietro, o probabilmente per il fatto che, dato il suo orientamento, da qui fecero ingresso in città vari eserciti stranieri, tra cui i mercenari pontifici, autori delle cosiddette “stragi” del XX giugno 1859, che consentirono la permanenza del governo pontificio fino al 1861.

The Gate, named after the nearby church of San Costanzo, remains incomplete compared with the original project which was carried out by the Benedictine Monks in one of their territories, following the project of Valentino Martelli.
The building of the door and the new road were necessary due to the enlargement of the Abbey of San Pietro, which absorbed the medieval Arch of Braccio and the ancient street.
Although majestic, it was popularly called “portaccia” (minor door), maybe in comparison with the nearby Door of San Pietro, or probably due to its orientation: from this door entered many foreign Army, among them the Pope’s Army, perpetrator of the 20th June 1859 massacre, which favored the establishment of the Pope’s government until 1861.
