Fontana Maggiore

La Fontana Maggiore, fu realizzata tra il 1278 e il 1280 da Nicola e Giovanni Pisano, per celebrare il compimento del nuovo acquedotto.

Il progetto si deve a frà Bevignate, mentre la parte idraulica fu eseguita da Boninsegna da Venezia. E’ composta da due vasche concentriche sovrapposte, decorate con 50 bassorilievi e 24 statue. La vasca inferiore reca a bassorilievo: scene della tradizione agraria, i mesi dell’anno con i segni zodiacali, le Arti Liberali, la Bibbia e la storia di Roma. La vasca superiore si compone di ventiquattro lastre separate da statue rappresentanti figure allegoriche, sacre e storiche.

Le vasche sono sormontate da una tazza bronzea coronata da un gruppo di tre ninfe, che rappresentano le tre virtù teologali (Fede, Speranza, Carità).

The Fontana Maggiore was created between 1278 and 1280 by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano to celebrate the completion of the new aqueduct. It was designed by Friar Bevignate, with the aid, for the hydraulic side, of Boninsegna from Venice.

It consists of two concentric polygonal basins, decorated with 50 bas-reliefs and 24 statues. The lower basin goes to relief scenes of the agrarian tradition, the months of the year with the zodiac signs, of the liberal arts, the Bible and the history of Rome. The upper tank is made up of twenty-four plates, separated by statues of allegorical and historical sacred figures.

The two basins are surmounted by a bronze cup, in turn crowned by a group of three “nymphs” who represent the three theological virtues (Faith, Hope, Charity).
