La chiesa dell’Annunziata di Fontignano, il cui impianto originario è riconducibile ad un’edicola stradale collocabile fra i secoli XI e XII, risale nella sua configurazione attuale alla prima metà del XV secolo. L’edificio ha subito nel corso dei secoli diversi interventi strutturali fino agli anni 30 del secolo scorso, quando la chiesa subisce l’accorciamento di una campata a beneficio dell’ampliamento del tratto stradale prospiciente.

Nella chiesa aveva già operato Benedetto Bonfigli nella seconda metà del ‘400, dipingendo nella parete absidale un’Annunciazione oggi molto ammalorata, quando viene chiamato Pietro Vannucci detto il Perugino al quale, tra gli anni 1522 e 1523, vengono commissionati dapprima la Madonna in trono col Bambino sulla parete di destra, affresco rimasto integro, quindi il ciclo pittorico più importante, purtroppo oggi non più presente, raffigurante l’Adorazione dei Pastori, affrescata sopra l’arco trionfale, e i Santi Sebastiano e Rocco, affrescati ai lati dell’arco ma facenti parte di un unicum con l’Adorazione. L’importanza di questo ciclo pittorico dipende principalmente dal fatto che è l’ultima opera del Perugino, che muore di peste tra il febbraio e il marzo del 1523 proprio mentre sta terminando l’Adorazione dei Pastori.

L’evento della morte di Pietro Vannucci a Fontignano segna l’inizio di due vicende che si susseguiranno lungo i secoli fino ai nostri giorni, quella della sepoltura del pittore e quella del destino dell’Adorazione dei Pastori. Le vicissitudini della sepoltura sono state ricostruite in una recente pubblicazione che, partendo dal seppellimento sotto la quercia per paura del contagio e documentando altre tre sepolture successive, giunge fino alla definitiva collocazione delle spoglie mortali del Perugino nell’attuale urna monumentale risalente al 1940. L’affresco dell’Adorazione dei Pastori invece subisce il distacco nel 1843 per essere venduto ed attualmente si trova al museo Victoria and Albert di Londra. Sono ancora in fase di studio tutti i passaggi che hanno portato l’opera da Fontignano fino al museo londinese, ma la scoperta più importante si è avuta durante l’anno del quinto centenario della morte del pittore, quando durante lavori di restauro sono riemerse tracce significative dell’affresco rimaste sulla parete a seguito dello strappo. Infine un’altra Madonna con Bambino sulla parete di sinistra (1526) viene a chiudere il cerchio di questo ciclo perché è di un allievo del Perugino, che probabilmente è lo stesso che 3 anni dopo la morte del maestro porta a termine l’Adorazione dei Pastori rimasta incompiuta.

The Church of the Annunziata in Fontignano dates back, in its present configuration, to the first half of the XV Century, but was originally a street votive shrine, built between the XI and the XII Century. The building has undergone, over the centuries, many structural changes till the 1930s, when the church was shortened because of street necessities.

In the Church, in the second half of the XV century, Benedetto Bonfigli painted an “Annunciazione” (Annunciation) in the abs wall, today in a very poor state of preservation; soon after Pietro Vannucci, also known as Perugino was commissioned, between 1522 and 1523, a “Madonna in trono col Bambino” (Enthroned Madonna with child) on the right wall, fresco well preserved still today, and a more important pictorial cycle not any longer present, with the “Adorazione dei Pastori” (Adoration of the Shepards), a fresco above the triumphal arch and the Saints  Sebastiano e Rocco, at its sides, but conceived as part of a single composition with the Adoration. The importance of the cycle is mainly due to the fact that it is Perugino’s last work, as he died by plague between February and March 1523, while completing the Adoration.

The death of Pietro Vannucci in Fontignano is the beginning of two intertwined vicissitude that extend over the centuries up to the present day: that of the burial of the painter and that of the destiny of the Adoration of the Shepherds. The first one has been lately described in a recent publication that, starting from the burial under the oak for fear of contagion, follows with documentation the subsequent reburials till the definitive collocation of the mortal remains of Perugino in the present monumental urn from 1940. The fresco with the Adoration of the Shepherds was detached from the wall in 1843 in order to be sold and is at the moment by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Still to be defined are the phases that brought the art work from Fontignano to the London Museum, but the most important recent discovery was made during the celebrations for the fifth centenary of the death of the painter, when, during some restoration works, significant remains of the fresco were recovered, still present on the wall after the removal. Another “Madonna col Bambino” (Madonna with Child) on the left wall (1526), completes this cycle; it was painted by a pupil of Perugino, probably the same artist who, three years after the death of the painter, finished the Adoration of the Shepherds, left incomplete.
